Project 1: Case Study of Building Services in Public Buildings
Introduction
This is a group project to perform a case study on building services systems applied and installed in multi-storey buildings. Students will be introduced to the common systems that are used in a bigger volume of spaces and a variety of users. This exercise requires students to develop their own understanding in the application of building services to make a building technically functional. This discovery will be useful in their future design studio projects to ensure that their building design proposals are practical and efficient.
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this assignment are as follows:

To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems found in buildings (experiential learning).

To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.

To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems and statutory requirements.

To develop students’ understanding and familiarization in applying the correct graphic communications according to the required standards (MS1184).
Learning Outcome of this Project
Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to:

Identify and understand relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, mechanical transportation system as well as fire protection systems.

Understand the functions and purposes of building services systems.

Understand the statutory requirements and regulations involved in building designs and its importance towards practicality and public safety.
Project 2: Application of Building Services
Introduction
Project 2 is an individual assignment on application of basic building services. This is an individual project to apply building services systems to a domestic sized building. This exercise requires students to demonstrate their understanding on the application by producing technical drawings incorporating the necessary building services.
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this project are as follows:

To develop the students’ understanding and knowledge of building services systems in design and construction.

To apply appropriate building services system and solution for a specific design.

To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical considerations.

To develop students’ ability to resolve issues related to specific building services systems.
Learning Outcome of this Project
Upon completion of this assignment, students will be able to:

Identify relevant information related to water and electrical supply, liquid waste disposal, sanitary and rainwater management system.

Describe the planning of building services within the design and construction peripheries.

Propose the more/most suitable systems for a specific type of building
